I think the impact of altered gear ratios can be calculated pretty easily and reliably by mathematical calculations (c.f., here). I also think that the real-world experience claims that leader gears improve acceleartion have mostly come from people who make profit out of selling those gears. I have never disagreed with reputed members that they don't make the car more responsive. They do, but my calculations have shown that leader gears do not improve acceleration when measured over a long enough speed range (e.g., 0-100mph). I think using shorter gears is a wrong trend when we increase power. Use of shorter gears with increased power only leads to power that can't be utilized.
